Kampung Hulu Mosque

Kampung Hulu Mosque (Malay: Masjid Kampung Hulu) built in 1728 during the Dutch Occupancy, is the oldest mosque in the country. Its unique architectural style is a unique blend of Sumatran, Hindu and Western architecture.

All of the building's original wooden structures except the four main pillars and the roof structure were replaced with concrete. Within the mosque compound, you can find the grave of Sayyid Abdullah Al-Haddad, a famous religious teacher, whom many regarded as a "Wali" (Saint).

A good way to see the Kampung Hulu Mosque is to include it as part of your walking tour of nearby Jonker Street. The Mosque is set just one street back from the famous street.

The architectural design of the mosque is a cross between Sumatran, Chinese, Hindu, and the Melaka Malay. The minaret, ablution pool and entrance arch were built at the same time with the main building. The minaret resembles a pagoda.

The mosque should not be confused with Kampung Kling Mosque, located a few blocks to the south; it also has a pagoda-like minaret.

Getting There

You can go there by either taxi, trishaw or town bus (No 17) from the main Melaka bus stand.

The best way to get to the Kampung Hulu Mosque is via taxi or by driving here yourself if you're from other part of Melaka.
