Poh San Teng Temple
The Poh San Teng Temple (Chinese: 宝山亭) or Sam Po Kong Temple (Chinese: 三宝庙)
is a Chinese temple in Malacca City. The temple was built around 1795 by Captain
Tsai Shih Chang and it is dedicated to Tua Pek Kong. The temple is located at
the foot of Bukit Cina (Chinese Hill), next to the Malacca Warrior Monument and
Hang Li Poh's Well.
The name of this temple literally translates as "Precious Hill Temple", but it
is also known as Sam Po Keng Temple in reference to a legendary type of fish
which saved one of Zheng He's (Cheng Ho) ships from sinking but using its body
to plug a leak. Adjacent to the entrance is the so-called Hang Li Poh's Well
(Sultan's Well) which was the main source of fresh water for the city from the
15th century onward.
It is often incorrectly assumed that the temple is associated with Admiral Zheng
He, a Ming-dynasty navigator. In fact, there is no evidence of Zheng He's
involvement in the history of the temple.
