Garama Wetland
The Garama Wetland is located in Beaufort and Kuala Penyu region. The Garama
Wetland is actually a long stretch of swampy river which consists of a diverse
ecosystem. This is indeed another unique place of interest in Sabah worth
visiting.
Visitors usually come to the Garama Wetland to watch at a closer distance at the
endangered species of monkey named the Proboscis monkeys. They are also known as
the Dutch monkey in the island of Borneo which is the only place that they can
be found.
The river cruise to view these unique creatures usually starts at 5.00 pm. Upon
arrival for the river ride, visitors will be served with light refreshments and
some delicacies from Sabah.
The river cruise is for duration of at least 60 minutes to 120 minutes. This
will ensure that visitors are able to experience these magnificent creatures as
well as the fantastic scenery. The calm setting of the swampy river also attract
other wildlife like the leaf monkey, birds, flying foxes, water buffalos as well
as Macaques.
Other than the Proboscis monkeys, there is also a chance for visitors to watch
thousands of fireflies on the trees. These fireflies make those trees look like
Christmas trees with lightings. The sight of these tiny fireflies along the
river bank is simply amazing. After the cruise ends, visitors will be serve
dinner at about 7.00 pm at the jetty.
Getting There
From Kota Kinabalu, the drive to Beaufort is about 2 hours via the Beaufort
Highway which is at the southwest of Sabah. You will need to travel another 25
kilometers to Kampung Garama to proceed with the river cruise. The river cruise
is best arranged with a tour-operator.
